Apple butter ham recipe!

I have always wanted to blog about recipes that I love so I’m going to be doing a little bit of that here in addition to posting pictures.  I LOVE to cook and try new recipes.  Allrecipes.com is my favorite place to get ideas for recipes.  Today I had a thawed 6lb bone-in half butt (LOL) ham that I’m sure I only have because I got it for free from Shoprite at Easter time.  Since it’s now free turkey time I figured I better find a use for that ham that was taking up all the room in my freezer.

I’m not that much of a ham girl but it’s one thing my little guy Jack actually devours without we having to fight and plead with him.  I usually just broil up a couple of ham steaks because they’re quick and easy.  So this big 6lb ham was a little intimidating to me.  So I did a little research and found out that the best way to cook a ham without drying it out is to use an oven bag.  I just put the ham  in a Reynolds Oven Bag and put that in a baking dish and cooked it at 350 for 25 minutes per pound.  This was a free ham so it didn’t come with any glaze or anything so I did a search on Alllrecipes.com for a quick glaze I could make with ingredients I already have.  I found the most delicious glaze.  It’s 1 cup of apple butter, 1/2 cup of orange juice, 1 tbs of dry minced onion (I used onion powder) and 1 tbs of Worcestershire sauce.  Mix the ingredients, simmer them on medium heat and glaze the ham either every 30 minutes or once 30 minutes before the ham is finished.  I did the latter because I’m lazy.  So 30 minutes before my ham was done I sliced open the oven bag and brushed the glaze all over the ham.  I turned the heat down to 325 and heated it uncovered for 30 minutes.  I served this delicious ham with mashed red potatoes (mashed with sour cream, dill and butter) and peas and I served the extra glaze as a dipping sauce.  The ham was like none I’ve ever had.  It was SOOOOO juicy and it fell off the bone.  I barely needed a knife to cut it up for Jack.  It was the yummiest ham I ever had!  I was way too hungry to take a picture of it before dinner but I do have a picture of what it looked like after dinner.   I know I’m no food stylist but I have to include at least one photo with every post.  Delish!

Good thing you put your Crane Photography watermark on this one. Don’t want Gourmet Magazine publishing it without credit!?!?
